Research  & Educational Opportunities

Horsburgh Atoll serves as an idyllic setting for conducting groundbreaking research in marine ecology, biodiversity, climate change, and conservation. Regenerative agriculture is another opportunity for visitors to learn and participate in sustainability efforts in Horsburgh. Seaweed farming is a growing practice in the Maldives, as it provides a sustainable source of food and can also be used to create fertilizer. Visitors can learn about the importance of regenerative agriculture and participate in activities such as seaweed farming and creating organic fertilizer using locally sourced materials. These activities not only support the local community but also contribute to the conservation of the island's delicate ecosystem.

There are many opportunities for research and volunteering in the Horsburgh Atoll, with a focus on conservation efforts to protect the fragile marine and terrestrial ecosystems. Potential volunteer and research topics include:

  1. Coral restoration: Volunteers can work with local organizations to help restore damaged coral reefs through activities such as coral planting, monitoring, and data collection. This helps to promote the growth and survival of coral reefs and the marine life that depend on them.
  2. Climate change impact research: Research organizations offer opportunities to study the impacts of climate change on the environment and help develop strategies for mitigation and adaptation.
  3. Sea turtle breeding programs: The Baa Atoll is a popular nesting site for sea turtles, and volunteers can work with local conservation organizations to help protect nesting sites and hatchlings, and participate in monitoring and data collection activities.
  4. Manta ray cleaning stations: Volunteers can assist with monitoring and maintaining manta ray cleaning stations, which provide a safe place for the rays to be cleaned of parasites by smaller fish. This helps to protect and conserve the manta ray population in the area.
  5. Mangrove conservation: Volunteers can work with local organizations to help conserve and protect the mangrove forests, which serve as a nursery for juvenile marine life and provide a buffer against coastal erosion.
  6. Regenerative agriculture: Provides the opportunity for visitors to learn and participate in sustainability efforts in Horsburgh.
